October 31, 2008 State Committee on Education Recommends No Legislation on Steroid Testing
Kitty Newsham, member of the Governmental Affairs Committee, was instrumental in the outcome with her testimony. The IATA supports education rather than testing and supported their arguments with facts from other states testing programs. The costs far outweigh the benefits of testing and show that education is key component to deterring drug use in school athletic programs. October 19, 2008 ESPN's Outside the Lines Covers Second Impact Syndrome
A video segment that was spurred by the death of Jaquan Waller, a high school football player in North Carolina, who suffered from second impact syndrome. Dr. Kevin Guskiewicz and Kira Au, ATC were both highlighted.

October 9, 2007 Indiana Athletic Trainer Elected President of National Association
Marjorie Albohm will serve as the next president of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). Elected by NATA’s general membership, Marje will lead the association’s 30,000 plus members in a four year term beginning when she is sworn in at the NATA Annual Meeting held June 2008 in St. Louis.

May 22, 2007 NCAA and NATA Press Conference
Several IATA members attended the NCAA/NATA press conference where findings from “Collegiate Athletic Injuries – Trends and Prevention”, a 16 year study utilizing the Injury Surveillance System (ISS), were released. The press conference took place at the NCAA Hall of Champions in Indianapolis on Tuesday May 22. IATA member Denny Miller, Director of Sports Medicine-Purdue University, spoke about how information gathered from the ISS was utilized to create the NATA's "Appropriate Medical Coverage of Intercollegiate Athletics".

With 206 NATA members, the day was a tremendous success! NATA members visited 175 members of Congress from 39 states and the District of Columbia with the NATA receiving very positive feedback! You only notice them when you need them. They are not extremely noticeable. They are generally quiet and unassuming. But very recently additional positive evidence was recorded which strongly points out the tremendous value and the importance of the athletic trainers of the respective Clermont County high school athletic departments.

November 2, 2006 Making Healthy Choices Forum
Unity Sportsmedicine in Lafayette, IN, sponsored a "Making Healthy Choices about Alcohol, Drugs, and Supplements" forum for middle and high school athletes, coaches, and parents on November 2nd at Lafayette Jefferson High School. Over 600 people attended the event. Guest speakers (featured in the picture on the above link, left to right) included: Dr. Chris Carr (Sports Psychologist, Indiana Neuroscience Institute, Indianapolis), Dr. Michael Krauss (Lafayette Orthopaedic and Sportsmedicine Clininc, Lafayette) and Coach Matt Painter (Head Men's Basketball Coach, Purdue University).

All of that changed when a teammate's helmet crashed into Koger's collarbone during an intrasquad scrimmage days before the Bronchos' 2005 sectional opener against Hamilton Southeastern.

The Collegiate Sports Medicine Foundation has teamed up with Life Signs America and the Indiana Athletic Trainers Association to offer a unique program to businesses, school sports medicine programs and athletic departments. This program provides a free AED, training of personnel, maintenance and replacement costs for five (5) years.
